Congrats

I'm pleased to announce that 'The Ghostwood Project' have won the 1st Roisin Dubh battle of the bands. I mixed the final and for the record I don't show prejudice to any band in these circumstances. Besides being unprofessional, it's also unethical. 7even words kicked off the night and were very good I must say. You can catch them over at Myspace. Breakdown Rambler were next but underperformed in my opinion. I've seen them much better. Nerves maybe? They were looser than usual and I honestly wish they'd been as good as usual. TGP came on and just rocked the place. I didn't change much on the shared channel's but they still brought the level of the gig up a notch. Well done.

And for the bad

I had to tell someone their services were not required anymore today (under instruction from my boss). I was going to tell them in person and they were coming to see me, but they changed their mind and it meant I had to text them the bad news. Now I'm as 'bad as them' meaning my bosses, without whom there would be no work (I've also "no respect for myself"). As if somehow there was this mythical war going between "us" and "them" . They have a budget for what we do and if we want the work then we take it, if not we don't. Easy. And as part of our contract we do the work they ask for the fee they offered and we ACCEPTED. It's the same for any employee. Despite the fact that a lot of people in my profession are freelance, when we work we still have a boss in that job. We perform a service and are certainly are not gods in our world. Our hourly rate is much higher than minimum and while certainly a skilled job, is not unattainable by the average Joe with a musical bent. If you take work and are expected to be there at a certain time and are late constantly, or have a bad attitude to the people you work with, so much so that they ask not to work with you, is this a reason for not seeking your services further? Well that is what was decided and I had to pass on the news. Of course now I'm the enemy.

Action.

In stark contrast to not getting the LIPF, I managed to get 2nd and 3rd place in the Digital Projections sections of the Galway Camera Club's 'Action' competition.

LIPF: Wexford

I spent the weekend in Wexford for the Judging for my Licentiship. I went down with Ken Seery, who was also going for his. To cut a long story short, he got his. I on the other hand, didn't. I wasn't confident of getting it anyway, but that never stops you from hoping. I had originally thought it was a one row panel for some reason and when I read the rules again I realised I was mistaken and it was actually 2 rows. Meanwhile my chosen prints were finished and mounted. I had to make 2 rows and obviously failed in my attempt. Usually, up until now, you get a copy of the judges sheet to gauge where you went wrong, but not anymore. I explained this to the judges and they were very, very, helpful in explaining where I had gone wrong. Mostly the layout of the panel itself was the issue. I had portraits looking out of the panel instead of in (Doh-I knew that already, but blindsided myself) and there were 2 similar images competing against themselves. This helped reduce my disappointment and has maybe spurned me on to planning a new panel (possibly a portrait panel). Hopefully the camera club will help organise the Distinction Roadshow where we can all learn more about the (for me before today) black art of making a winning panel. Finally a big shoutout to Ken in a big congratulations on getting his LIPF first time. He's a much more patient shooter than me and it really paid off for him.

Bloc Party

I've put up a quick gallery of shots from bloc party and I'll be adding larger shots to Random Panderings over the next few days. The gallery is on my main site but not linked from there: Bloc Party

Sound out

Tipping along. I believe that the Leptard may be returning after Christmas. About time too I say. I'd link to the site but there's not much to look at and comments are disabled.
Photo news.
  • I've a few people in for shoots so I'll be adding that material to Random Panderings.
  • I've put up a gallery of images from this weekend Womens Rubgy on my rubgy page over at Pbase.com.
  • I'm off to Wexford next weekend to attempt to get my LIPF for the first time. It's not exactly a given by any means so I'm a bit nervous about it. I think my prints are a little dark but am still happy with them. If I get it, great, if not then there's always next year.
  • Mentioning RP above reminded me that I made the top 100 newcomers list... with only 2 Favourites though. If you frequent photoblogs.org, please add me as a favourite!
    Bands.
  • Going to Bloc Party tomorrow. Yeah! I'll be shooting of course.
  • Erin McKeown was great last Friday, but Lucas should be excellent next Friday.
Too tired for any more wiring.. Night!
